Can You Screen Record FaceTime? Yes, and Here Is What Actually Gets Captured

TL;DR / Executive Summary
  • Screen recording a FaceTime call is built into every modern iPhone and iPad. No app is needed for the video.
  • The other person is not notified by a screen recording. They are notified if you take a FaceTime Live Photo.
  • Audio is the weak point. Turn the microphone on from the Record button's long-press menu, and use the speaker, not headphones.
  • Recording someone without consent can be illegal where you live. Ask first, every time.
  • If the native recording misses what you need, an app can help you clean up and present the footage afterwards.

Quick answer: Yes. You can screen record a FaceTime call on an iPhone or iPad with the built-in Record button in Control Center, and FaceTime does not notify the other person when you do. The catch is sound: the video always records, but the other person's voice is often missing or faint unless you turn the microphone on and keep the call on speaker. Test a 15-second clip before the call that matters, and ask the other person first.

Can you record a FaceTime call at all?

There are five honest ways to record a FaceTime call, and they capture different things. Pick the one that matches what you actually need to keep.

The simplest one for most people is the built-in screen recorder with the mic on. It costs nothing, takes ten seconds to set up, and keeps the file in your Photos library.

If you only need audio from a one-to-one FaceTime audio call, Apple's own Call Recording feature is cleaner. It records both sides, transcribes the conversation, and saves it to Notes. It only works in some countries and languages, and everyone on the call hears that they are being recorded. We cover that in our guide on whether you can screen record a phone call.

How to screen record a FaceTime call, step by step

These steps match Apple's current support guide for iOS 18 and later, including iOS 26.

  1. Add the Record button if you do not see it. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. If there is no round Record button, tap the + in the top-left corner, tap Add a Control, search for "Screen Recording" and tap it. On iOS 17 or earlier, go to Settings > Control Center and tap the green + next to Screen Recording. Our guide to adding screen record on iPhone walks through both layouts.
  2. Turn the microphone on. In Control Center, touch and hold the Record button. A panel opens with a Microphone button at the bottom. Tap it so it turns red and reads "Microphone On". This is the step most people miss.
  3. Start the recording before the call. Tap Start Recording. You get a three-second countdown. Close Control Center.
  4. Make or answer the FaceTime call. Switch the call to speaker if you want your iPhone's microphone to pick up the other person's voice.
  5. Stop when you are done. Tap the red pill in the status bar or the Dynamic Island, then tap Stop. You can also open Control Center and tap the red Record button.
  6. Find the file. Open Photos. The recording sits at the bottom of your Library, and on recent iOS versions it also appears under Media Types > Screen Recordings.

Start the recording a few seconds before the call connects. If you start it mid-call, the Control Center panel briefly appears in the video, which you will want to trim out later.

Will the other person's voice be captured?

This is the question that sends most people to search, so here is the plain version.

Apple treats call audio differently from normal app audio. FaceTime voice is routed through the phone's call system, and in many iOS versions that stream is not written into a screen recording the way a YouTube video's sound would be. The result is a familiar complaint: the video looks perfect, but you can only hear yourself, or you hear nothing at all.

What reliably helps:

  • Microphone on. Without it, you will usually get silent video.
  • Speaker on. With the mic on and the call on speaker, the phone's microphone picks up the other person's voice from the speaker. It sounds like a room recording, not studio audio, but it is clear enough to understand.
  • No headphones. With AirPods or wired earbuds, their voice goes into your ears and the mic only hears you.
  • A quiet room. Fans, TVs and traffic get recorded too, because the mic is now doing all the work.

If you have tried all of this and the other side is still silent, read our dedicated fix guide: how to record FaceTime with audio. It walks through each cause and the order to try fixes in.

Does FaceTime notify the other person?

No. A screen recording does not send any alert to the other person. There is no "screen recording detected" banner in FaceTime.

The one thing that does notify both people is a FaceTime Live Photo. That is the white shutter button you can tap during a video call. It captures a short moment, and the other person sees a notice that a Live Photo was taken. Live Photos must be turned on by both people in Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime Live Photos.

The fact that FaceTime does not warn the other person is exactly why you should tell them yourself.

Recording laws are about people, not apps. In the United States, some states allow you to record a conversation as long as you are part of it ("one-party consent"), and others require everyone on the call to agree ("all-party consent"). Several countries in Europe and Asia have stricter privacy rules than either. Rules also change when the people on the call are in different places.

We are not lawyers, and this is not legal advice. The safe habit is simple:

  • Say "Is it OK if I record this?" at the start, and let them answer on the recording.
  • Tell them what you will use it for: a memory, notes, a tutorial, a support case.
  • Do not share a recording of someone else without their permission.
  • If they say no, do not record.

This takes five seconds and removes almost every legal and personal problem.

Common problems and quick fixes

The Record button is grey or missing. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Screen Recording and set it to Allow. Work phones managed by a company can block recording entirely; in that case you need your IT team.

The recording stopped by itself. Screen recording stops when storage runs low, when an incoming phone call takes over, or when you start screen mirroring. Free up a few gigabytes before a long call. You cannot screen record and screen mirror at the same time.

The video is black. FaceTime itself records fine, but if you switch to a protected app during the call (Netflix, some banking apps), that part of the recording turns black. That is the app protecting its content, not a fault on your phone. Our Netflix screen recording guide explains why.

Only my voice is recorded. Turn the speaker on and remove headphones. If you need both sides clean, use a second device or, for audio calls, Call Recording where it is available.

The file is huge. A one-hour screen recording can be several gigabytes. Trim it in Photos (open it, tap Edit, drag the yellow handles) before sending.

What about recording FaceTime on a Mac?

On a Mac you can press Shift + Command + 5, choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion, and set the microphone under Options. Like the iPhone, the built-in recorder captures your microphone, not the Mac's internal call audio, so the other person's voice is clearest when it plays through the Mac's speakers. Apps that capture system audio exist for macOS, but they need extra permissions and setup, and the consent rules above still apply.

When an app is worth it

For most people, the built-in recorder is enough. You record, you trim, you keep it.

An app becomes useful when the recording is going somewhere other than your camera roll: a tutorial, a product demo, a support video, a post. Raw FaceTime footage has notches, status bars, awkward pauses and moments where you fumble with the screen. That is where editing tools help.

MobileStudio is a mobile screen recorder and video editor built for exactly that last mile. On Android it lets you record your screen, trim the dead bits, crop to the part that matters, add zoom effects to point at details, and put the recording inside a device frame with a clean background so it looks finished. It is available now on Google Play, and the iPhone version is in progress.

We want to be clear about what it is not: MobileStudio does not unlock call audio that iOS or Android withholds from screen recordings, and nothing honest can promise that. It helps you turn a recording you already captured into something people will actually watch.

A 60-second checklist before your next FaceTime recording

  1. Record button is in Control Center.
  2. Microphone is On (long-press the Record button to check).
  3. You have at least 2 to 3 GB of free storage.
  4. Headphones are off and the call is on speaker.
  5. You have done a 15-second test and played it back with sound.
  6. The other person has said yes.
  7. Recording starts before the call connects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you record a FaceTime call without the other person knowing?

Technically, a screen recording does not alert them. Legally and ethically, you should tell them. In many places, recording someone without consent is against the law.

Does screen recording FaceTime record audio?

It records your microphone if you turn the mic on. The other person's voice is often only captured when the call is on speaker, because iOS frequently keeps call audio out of the recording itself.

How long can a FaceTime screen recording be?

There is no fixed time limit. Recordings stop when storage runs out, when the phone gets too hot, or when another call interrupts.

Can I record a group FaceTime call?

Yes, the same steps work for Group FaceTime. The audio limits are the same, and you need everyone's agreement, not just one person's.

Where do FaceTime screen recordings go?

To the Photos app, in your Library and under Media Types > Screen Recordings on recent versions of iOS.

Is there a FaceTime recording app that captures both voices perfectly?

Be careful with any app that promises this. iOS limits what third-party apps can capture from calls. The most reliable options are the speaker-plus-mic method, a second device, or Apple's Call Recording for one-to-one audio calls where it is offered.
