How to Add Screen Record on iPhone (When the Button Is Missing or Greyed Out)

TL;DR / Executive Summary
  • iOS 18 redesigned Control Center. The old Settings path no longer lists Screen Recording, which is why so many people cannot find it.
  • On iOS 18 and later, you add controls from inside Control Center with the + button.
  • On iOS 17 and earlier, you add it in Settings > Control Center.
  • Greyed out usually means Screen Time restrictions or a managed device.
  • Once added, it stays. You only do this once.

Quick answer: On iOS 18 and later (including iOS 26), open Control Center, tap the + in the top-left corner, tap Add a Control, search for Screen Recording and tap it. On iOS 17 and earlier, go to Settings > Control Center and tap the green + next to Screen Recording. If the button is there but greyed out, Screen Time or a work profile is blocking it.

First, check which iOS you have

Go to Settings > General > About and look at iOS Version.

  • 18.0 or higher (including 26): use the new method.
  • 17.x or lower: use the classic method.

Method 1: iOS 18 and later (including iOS 26)

  1. Open Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
  2. Enter edit mode. Tap the + in the top-left corner. You can also touch and hold any empty space.
  3. Tap "Add a Control" at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Search for "Screen Recording" or scroll to the Capture section.
  5. Tap Screen Recording. It appears in your Control Center.
  6. Move it if you want. Drag it to a spot you can reach easily.
  7. Tap an empty area to leave edit mode.

You can also resize some controls in edit mode by dragging the corner handle. The Record control works the same at any size, but a larger one is easier to hit.

  • Make sure you searched for "Screen Recording", not "record" alone. Voice Memos and camera controls can show up first.
  • Check you are not in a different Control Center page. iOS 18 lets you have several pages; swipe between them.
  • Update iOS under Settings > General > Software Update. Early builds of a major release sometimes have Control Center bugs.

Method 2: iOS 17 and earlier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Control Center.
  3. Under More Controls, find Screen Recording.
  4. Tap the green + next to it. It moves to Included Controls.
  5. Drag the three-line handle to reorder if you want.
  6. Open Control Center to check it is there.

On iOS 13 and earlier, the menu was called Customize Controls inside Control Center settings. The idea is the same.

The button is there but greyed out

This is the second most common problem. Work through these:

1. Screen Time restrictions

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Tap Content Restrictions (you may need your Screen Time passcode).
  4. Scroll to Game Center and find Screen Recording.
  5. Set it to Allow.

Parents often turn this off on children's phones. If you do not know the passcode, ask whoever set up Screen Time.

2. Work or school device management

If your iPhone is managed by an employer or school (check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management), the organisation can disable screen recording. Only their IT team can change that.

3. Screen mirroring is on

You cannot screen record while mirroring to an Apple TV or Mac. Stop mirroring in Control Center first.

4. A glitch

Restart the iPhone. If that does not help, remove the control from Control Center and add it again.

The button works, but the recording fails

  • "Failed to save screen recording": Usually low storage. Free space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. It can also happen when recording ends because of a call or heat.
  • Short or empty video: You stopped too quickly, or the app you recorded blocks capture.
  • Black video: That app protects its content. Common for Netflix and some banking apps. See why Netflix records black.

Now that it is added: how to record

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap Record and wait for the countdown.
  3. To stop, tap the red pill at the top of the screen or in the Dynamic Island, then tap Stop.

To record your voice, long-press the Record button and turn on Microphone first. The full walkthrough is in how to screen record on iPhone, and sound issues are covered in does screen recording record audio?

Make the most of the recordings you take

Once screen recording is one tap away, most people start using it for more than saving a moment: showing a parent how to change a setting, reporting a bug, demonstrating an app to a client, posting a tip. Those clips get far more views when they are trimmed tightly and the important tap is zoomed in.

MobileStudio is a mobile screen recorder and video editor built for that. It turns raw recordings into clean demos and tutorials with trimming, cropping, zoom effects, device frames and backgrounds. It is on Google Play for Android now, and the iPhone version is coming soon.

Set up Control Center for faster recording

Once Screen Recording is added, a few minutes of setup makes it quicker to use every time.

Put it on the first page. iOS 18 and later let Control Center have several pages. Drag Record onto the first page so you do not have to swipe to find it.

Put it within thumb reach. If you hold your phone in one hand, place Record low and on your thumb's side.

Make it bigger. In edit mode, some controls can be resized by dragging a handle at the corner. A larger Record button is easier to hit quickly.

Group it with related controls. Put Do Not Disturb or Focus next to Record, so you can silence notifications and start recording in one visit to Control Center.

Remove what you never use. A tidier Control Center means you find Record faster.

Allowing screen recording on a child's iPhone

If you manage a child's iPhone with Family Sharing, screen recording is controlled from your own phone:

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time and choose your child's name under Family.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Tap Content Restrictions, then find Screen Recording under Game Center.
  4. Choose Allow or Don't Allow.

Some parents allow it for homework and school projects but keep it off otherwise. You can change it any time.

If Control Center itself is acting up

Occasionally Control Center gets into a strange state after an update: controls missing, layout reset, or the panel not opening. Try these in order:

  1. Restart the iPhone. Hold the side button and a volume button, slide to power off, then turn it back on.
  2. Check that Control Center works in apps. On older iOS versions there was a setting called Access Within Apps under Settings > Control Center. If it was off, Control Center only opened on the Home Screen.
  3. Remove and re-add the control. In edit mode, tap the minus on Screen Recording, then add it again.
  4. Update iOS. Early releases of a major version sometimes fix Control Center bugs in the first update.
  5. Reset settings as a last resort. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings restores default settings without deleting your data, but you will need to set up Wi-Fi, wallpaper and other preferences again.

A note on Lock Screen and Action button shortcuts

With iOS 18 and later, Apple opened up controls so they can live in more places. On supported models you may be able to put a control on the Lock Screen or assign one to the Action button. If Screen Recording is available there on your version, it gives you one-press recording. If not, Control Center remains the fastest route.

Where Screen Recording sits among the new controls

In the iOS 18 and later controls gallery, Screen Recording is grouped with capture tools such as camera and screenshot-related controls. If search gives you too many results, scroll the gallery by category instead. Third-party apps can also add their own controls to the gallery, so you may see recorder apps listed there too. The built-in one is simply called Screen Recording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Screen Recording the same as Screen Mirroring?

No. Screen Mirroring sends your screen to a TV or Mac. Screen Recording saves a video on your iPhone. You cannot use both at once.

How do I remove screen recording from Control Center?

Enter edit mode (tap + or touch and hold an empty space), then tap the minus on the Screen Recording control.

Does screen recording work on older iPhones?

Yes. Every iPhone that runs iOS 11 or later has screen recording. The way you add the button depends on the iOS version.

Can I record without opening Control Center?

On supported models with iOS 18 or later, you may be able to put the control on the Lock Screen or Action button. Otherwise, Control Center is the only built-in way.

Why did my Control Center layout change after an update?

Major iOS updates can reset or rearrange Control Center. Add Screen Recording back using the steps above.

Where is the screen record button on iPhone?

In Control Center, once added. It is a round button with a dot inside a ring. Swipe down from the top-right corner to see it.

Why is screen recording not in my Settings anymore?

iOS 18 moved Control Center customisation into Control Center itself. Tap the + inside Control Center instead.

How do I add screen recording on iOS 26?

The same as iOS 18: open Control Center, tap +, tap Add a Control, search Screen Recording, tap it.

Why is my screen record button grey?

Screen Time restrictions or a device management profile is blocking it. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Can I add screen recording to the Lock Screen or Action button?

On iOS 18 and later, some Control Center controls can also be placed on the Lock Screen or assigned to the Action button on supported models. Look for Screen Recording in those control galleries.

Do I need an app to screen record on iPhone?

No. It is built in. Apps are useful for editing and presentation afterwards.
