How to write a SaaS alternative page that AI search can cite
How to structure a SaaS alternative page so ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can cite it: a direct answer, a real comparison table, pricing, and a correction path.
Someone who is ready to switch does not search for your brand. They search for the tool they already pay for, plus the word "alternative", or they type the two names with "vs" between them. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews answer that question by quoting a page that already states the difference in a short paragraph, then backs it up with a table and a price.
An alternative page is that page. This guide is the structure that makes one citable, and the checks that keep it from being a thin rewrite of a competitor's marketing site.
Start from the query, not the slogan
Write down the exact search you want to be the answer to. Two shapes cover almost every buyer who is already comparing:
- `{Competitor} alternatives`
- `{Your product} vs {Competitor}`
Pick one competitor per page. A page that tries to beat five products at once does not answer any one of those queries. If you compete with several tools, publish several pages. On AltHunt, the free plan is one page, Pro is up to two, and Growth is up to five. The limits are on the pricing page.
If nobody searches the competitor's name, the page will not be cited and it will not be found. The FAQ says the same thing: this works when the competitor is a name buyers already type.
Put the answer in the first paragraph
AI answer engines lift a short passage. Put that passage first, before the screenshot and before the table. It should do four things in plain sentences:
- Name both products.
- Say the concrete difference a buyer would use to decide.
- Say who the page is for.
- Say where the competitor is still the better choice.
That last sentence is not modesty. A page that only praises itself is the page an answer engine skips, because the reader asked for a comparison. On AltHunt the opening paragraph is the answer capsule, and it sits above the image for that reason.
Do not open with "welcome to our blog" or a history of your company. The first paragraph is the answer.
Make the table the evidence
A heading that says "we are better" is not evidence. A table is. Use one row per claim a buyer can check:
Comparison Matrix
2026 Verified| Claim | What to put in the cell |
|---|---|
| Feature | It exists, it does not, or it exists only on a higher plan. |
| Price | The published price and what it includes. Link the source or date it. |
| Setup | What a new team actually does in the first hour. |
| Limit | The cap that makes someone outgrow the tool. |
Show the price, including yours
Buyers who searched "alternatives" are often comparing cost. Put a pricing section on the page with the plan name and what it includes for both products. Say when you last checked it. "Updated" with a real date belongs on the page, not only in a CMS field nobody can see.
If your product is free and the competitor is not, say that. If the competitor is cheaper for a use you do not serve, say that too. Hiding the expensive case is how comparison pages lose trust.
Write the migration, not a slogan
A cited page still has to help the person who believes you. Add a short "how to switch" section: what they export, what they recreate by hand, and what they will lose. Three to six steps is enough. If there is no clean export, say so. That is more useful than a step that pretends the move is instant.
One page, one competitor, one URL
Keep the URL stable. `{your-product}-vs-{competitor}` is readable and matches the query. Do not publish a second URL for the same pair with a `-2` or a misspelling. Those split the citations and the links.
On AltHunt the page lives at `/compare/{slug}` and stays there after its week on the board ends. The weekly board is a ranking by reader votes for that week. It is not a substitute for the page. When the week closes, the URL is still the thing a search engine and an answer engine can cite.
You can see every live page on the comparisons index. A brand that already has several pages also has an index under Alternatives.
Say who should not switch
Add a short section for the buyer who should stay. Examples that are honest:
- They need a feature you do not have.
- Their team is already trained and the migration cost is higher than the price difference.
- They need a compliance program you have not finished.
Answer engines quote this kind of sentence because it matches the way people actually ask: "is X actually better than Y for a small team?"
Add questions the buyer types
Four or five questions are enough. Use the wording of the search, not internal jargon. Good questions:
- How much does {competitor} cost compared with {you}?
- Can I import my data?
- Where is {competitor} still stronger?
- Who is this alternative for?
Answer each one in two or three sentences. Do not paste the same paragraph under every question.
Let the competitor correct you
Put a visible way to report a wrong claim. A page that cannot be corrected will keep a stale price in front of every model that quoted it. AltHunt puts a correction form on each comparison and emails the page owner. You still decide the edit. Ignoring a true correction is how a page gets taken down.
What to leave out
- A star rating you invented. If you have not collected reviews, do not print 4.7.
- A paragraph that says the competitor is "legacy" or "clunky" with no fact attached.
- The same introduction copied onto every competitor. Answer engines treat that as one page repeated.
- A promise that the page "will rank." Structure makes a citation possible. It does not guarantee one.
A simple outline you can draft today
- Title: `{Product} alternative to {Competitor}`, with the names first.
- Answer paragraph, 50 to 120 words, including where they are stronger.
- Feature table.
- Who it is for, and who should stay.
- How to migrate.
- Pricing table with the date you checked.
- Four questions.
- A link to your product and a way to suggest a correction.
That is the draft. Read every cell before you publish it. If you want the draft started for you, publish an alternative page on AltHunt and edit it before it goes live. The steps for picking the query and the page shape are also in alternative pages and SEO.
How this shows up in AI answers
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews do not share one ranking formula, and this guide will not pretend they do. What they share is a preference for a passage that answers a named comparison without making the reader hunt. The page above is that passage, plus the table and the price a buyer needs in order to trust the quote.
Publish one page. Make it specific. Date it. Correct it when the competitor's price changes. Then write the next competitor, on its own URL.
