ChatGPT SEO: How to Get Named in ChatGPT Answers

TL;DR / Executive Summary

ChatGPT Search cites Reddit, Wikipedia and news heavily and links out weakly. How it picks sources, and what actually gets a SaaS brand named in its answers.

ChatGPT SEO is optimising to be named and cited inside ChatGPT's answers. It behaves differently from Google. ChatGPT leans on Reddit, Wikipedia and news sources, mentions brands far more often than it links to them, and takes roughly 44.7% of its citations from brand domains against Google AI Overviews' 59.8%. The practical consequence: ChatGPT is an awareness channel first and a traffic channel second. Optimise to be mentioned, and measure it in branded search rather than referrals.

How ChatGPT finds sources

Two different pathways, and they need different work.

Training data. What the model absorbed before its cutoff. You influence this slowly, by existing in enough places over enough time that the model has a stable idea of what your product is. Wikipedia, Reddit threads, GitHub, news coverage, and your own docs all feed it.

Live retrieval. When a query needs current information, ChatGPT Search fetches pages through `OAI-SearchBot` and `ChatGPT-User`. This is the fast pathway and the one you can affect this month.

Allowing `GPTBot` while blocking `OAI-SearchBot` is a common configuration mistake that leaves you out of the second pathway completely.

What it cites, and what that means

Across a 2026 analysis of more than a million citations, ChatGPT's sourcing skews toward community and encyclopedic content. Wikipedia sits at the top of its most-cited sources. Reddit runs close behind. Commercial `.com` domains still account for over 80% of citations by volume, but they are spread thinly across many sites while the community sources concentrate.

The uncomfortable finding for marketers: ChatGPT mentions brands frequently and links to them weakly. You get named in the answer without getting the click.

That changes what success looks like. If you measure ChatGPT SEO in referral sessions you will conclude it does not work. Measure it in branded search volume and in how often your name appears when someone asks about your category.

The five things that get you named

1. Be described consistently everywhere. The model builds an association between your name and a category. If your homepage says "revenue enablement platform", your G2 listing says "sales content management", and your Reddit comments say "we help teams find decks", there is no stable association to retrieve. Pick one sentence and repeat it everywhere for a year.

2. Exist on the sources it trusts. A well-maintained GitHub README, accurate directory listings, an honest Reddit presence, and mentions in trade press do more than another blog post.

3. Publish comparison content. "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X" queries are among the most common commercial prompts people give ChatGPT, and comparison pages are structurally easy to quote: a named set of options, a table, a recommendation.

4. Answer the question in the first paragraph. The live-retrieval pathway pulls passages. Same rules as every other engine.

5. Keep facts current and dated. For anything with a price attached, include the month you verified it.

Why Reddit is not optional

Reddit accounts for roughly 40% of consolidated AI citation share across the major answer engines. That is not a channel you can out-publish.

You can participate in it, and the only version that works is the honest one: answer questions in the subreddits where your buyers already are, disclose what you build, and be useful when your product is not the answer. A founder who shows up for six months as the person who knows the category gets mentioned by other people, and those mentions are what the models read.

The version that does not work is dropping links. It gets removed by moderators, and removed comments do not get indexed.

How to check if ChatGPT knows you exist

Run these five prompts monthly and write down what comes back:

  1. "What is [your product]?"
  2. "Best tools for [your category]"
  3. "[Competitor] alternatives"
  4. "Cheapest [category] tool for a small team"
  5. "[Your product] vs [main competitor]"

You are looking for three things: whether you appear at all, whether the description is accurate, and whether the answer cites a page you control or a third party describing you. Wrong descriptions are the most fixable problem, because they usually trace back to one stale source you can go and correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

Allow `OAI-SearchBot` and `ChatGPT-User` in robots.txt, make sure your key content is in the server-rendered HTML, and publish pages that answer specific commercial questions in the first paragraph. Then build presence on the sources ChatGPT cites heavily, especially Reddit.

Does ChatGPT send meaningful traffic?

Less than its mention volume suggests. ChatGPT names brands more often than it links to them. Perplexity generally sends more traffic per citation, and Google AI Overviews provides the highest number of clickable links.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not for organic answers. There is no ad placement inside the cited-source set today, and anyone selling guaranteed placement is selling something they do not control.

Why does ChatGPT describe my product wrong?

It is usually repeating a stale or inconsistent source. Find where the wrong description lives, correct it there, and make your own description identical across your site, your directory listings and your docs.
