AI Visibility Tools: What They Track and Who Needs One
AI visibility tools track whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews mention your brand. What they measure, what they miss, and the free way to start.
An AI visibility tool tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand when people ask questions in your category. They work by running a set of prompts on a schedule and recording which brands and sources appear. That is genuinely useful data and it is also data you can collect by hand for free. Buy a tool when you are tracking more than about thirty prompts or reporting to someone else. Below that, a spreadsheet and an hour a month gets you the same signal.

What these tools actually do
Underneath the dashboards, the mechanism is simple. The tool holds a list of prompts, runs them against several AI platforms on a schedule, parses the answers, and records which brands were named and which URLs were cited.
Everything else is presentation: trend lines, share-of-voice against competitors, sentiment tagging, and alerts when you drop out of an answer.
Knowing the mechanism tells you two things. First, the data is only as good as the prompt list, so a tool with a bad prompt list is worse than a spreadsheet with a good one. Second, answers are non-deterministic, so a single run means nothing and only repeated sampling has signal.
The four things worth measuring
1. Presence. Does your brand appear in the answer at all? The binary that matters most.
2. Citation versus mention. Being named is not the same as being linked. ChatGPT in particular mentions far more than it links, so a tool that conflates the two will overstate your position.
3. Source attribution. Which URL got cited? If answers about your product cite a competitor's comparison page, that is your highest-priority content gap and the single most actionable output of this whole category.
4. Share of voice. How often you appear against named competitors for the same prompt set.
What they measure well, and what they miss
Measure well: presence and share of voice over time across platforms, which sources get cited, and when something changes suddenly.
Miss, consistently:
- Volume. Nobody knows how many people actually asked the prompt. All share-of-voice numbers are share of your sample, not share of the market.
- Personalisation. Answers vary by user history, location and account. Your tool sees one anonymous version.
- Conversion. An AI mention that produces a branded search three days later is invisible to every attribution model in use today.
- Causation. When you appear in more answers after publishing ten pages, no tool can tell you which page did it.
Treat the output as a directional thermometer, not a measurement instrument.
The free method
This takes about an hour a month and gets you most of the value.
- Write 20 prompts a real buyer would type. Mix category questions, competitor-alternative questions, pricing questions and direct brand questions.
- Run all 20 across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, in a logged-out window.
- Record in a spreadsheet: date, platform, prompt, did you appear, which competitors appeared, which URLs were cited.
- Repeat monthly. Three months in, you have a trend nobody sold you.
Pair it with two things you already have: server logs filtered for `OAI-SearchBot`, `PerplexityBot` and `ClaudeBot`, and referral traffic from the AI domains in your analytics.
How to choose one
Before you compare products, answer these:
Step 1 - How many prompts do you need tracked? Under 30, do it manually. Over 100, a tool pays for itself immediately.
Step 2 - Which platforms matter to your buyers? Developer tools skew to ChatGPT and Claude. Consumer research skews to Google AI Overviews. Do not pay for coverage you will not read.
Step 3 - Do you need source-level citation data? This is the feature that changes what you build next. If a tool only reports mentions, it cannot tell you which page to write.
Step 4 - Are you reporting to someone else? Dashboards exist mostly to be shown to a board or a client. If nobody is asking, you are buying presentation.
Step 5 - Does it track competitors on the same prompt set? Share of voice is the only version of this data that survives contact with a leadership meeting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI visibility tool?
Software that runs a set of prompts against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on a schedule and records whether your brand is mentioned or cited. It is brand rank tracking for answer engines rather than search results.Do I need an AI visibility tool?
Only if you are tracking enough prompts that manual sampling becomes tedious, or you need to show trend data to someone else. A 20-prompt spreadsheet run monthly gives a solo founder the same directional signal for free. Can these tools tell me why I lost a citation?
No. They tell you that you appeared and then did not. The cause is usually a competitor publishing something more specific, or one of your own facts going stale. Diagnosis is still manual.Does Google Search Console show AI visibility?
Not for third-party engines. Search Console includes AI Overviews impressions inside overall Search data without separating them, and it has no visibility into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude at all.Publish your alternative page 100% free
